You might be surprised if I told you this mug was glazed with one glaze. When butterscotch glaze is too thin, a dark brown color results on darker clay bodies such as the black mountain clay used for this mug. To get the butterscotch yellow to result, the glaze needs to be thick enough. The top of this rim has a thicker layer of the glaze which is why you see a bright yellow color.
